Over
all, we had some great mule deer hunting. Game and fish say that herds in the
West are declining, but there are still some really good areas to hunt. These
deer were all shot on lands either owned or leased by the Rockin' 7 Ranch. We
had only one hunter go home empty, and he was a great repeat client that said
if he couldn't find one bigger than the one he got last year, he wasn't going
to shoot it--after 4 days of hard hunting and probably glassing over 50 buck deer,
he went home empty. We'll try again next year Lou! Typically
the shots on these deer ranged from 50 yards on out to a couple of great shots
at just under 600 yards--with the majority of them being 175 to 250 yards. A wide
range of calibers were used, but most popular is .30 caliber--.30-06, 300 Winchester
Mag, and 300 short mag all work very effectively on mule deer. A .270 or .25-06
are very effective too, but anything under about 110 grains starts getting a little
light for these deer. |
